STUDIO ACCESS: 3 PART PROGRAM
Includes:
Independent booking and use of the Ceramics Studio during set after-hours times, during Open Studio sessions.

Whilst there is scheduled ‘Open Studio’ times under the supervision of the Ceramics Coordinator, completing the Studio Access course will give you the opportunity to book and use the Ceramics Studio in your own time. This course is designed for people who are dedicated to including ceramics into their existing practice or looking to explore a new line of business.
The following modules are designed to give participants the wholistic skills and knowledge to operate in the Ceramics Studio independently.
Module One – $120.00

Introduction to the ceramics studio purpose and vision
- Ceramics studio schedule (casual drop-in, workshops, product production)
- Provision of foundational skills to move towards the ability to work in a Ceramics Studio independently
Health and safety in the studio
- Ground rules of operation
- Review OHS policies and procedures
Studio Processes
- Setting up
- Storing clay
- Wedging clay
- Naming work
- And the firing schedule
Foundational skills
- Practical making of pinch pot, coiling, slab rolling, embossing, bas relief carving & slumping
- Firing principles
*All work will be fired to stoneware and can be collected by participant.
Module Two – $160.00
Introduction to stages of clay drying
- Plastic, leather hard, greenware
Kiln firing
- Safety
- Different types
- What happens to clay at different temperature
- Function of glazes
Design processes for functional wares
- Functionality vs design
- Glazing
- Vitrification
- Kitchen use
Slab construction reviewing
- Thickness
- Handle pulling
- Slip decoration
Reclaiming clay
- Process, safety, tips and tricks.
*All work will be bisque fired in preparation for glazing.

Module Three – $160.00
Glazing
- OHS and policies and procedure
- Chemical properties of glazes
Studio processes
- Wax resist
- Applying premixed clear glaze
- Mixing stains
Sculptural works – combining techniques to create artistic works.
- Design process & review with Ceramics Co-ordinator
- Individual choice project

To be offered Studio Access Time you must have completed:
- Induction contract signed
- Completed Module One
- Completed Module Two
- Completed Module Three
- Logbook of 15 hours in ‘Open Studio’ sessions. (Logbook purchase of $10)
