The Jury Art Prize 2022

Artists are invited to submit their artwork for The Jury Art Prize to be exhibited at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio from 21 May – 05 August 2022.  

The art prize is open to regional Western Australian artists working in all artistic mediums, including painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture, and digital art.  

There is no set theme for The Jury Art Prize. However, artists can draw inspiration from The Junction Co. and Courthouse Gallery’s 2022 program theme: New World. 

There are four prize categories: the Judge’s Prize, Encouragement Award, Patron Award, and Jury Prize. Winners will be announced at the exhibition’s official opening on Saturday 21 May, except for the Jury Prize (people’s choice award), which will be announced on Friday, 29 July 2022.  

There is a submission fee of $30+GST to enter The Jury Art Prize.

  • Entrants must be 18+ years old.  
  • One submission only per artwork; you can enter as many times as you wish. 
  • Open to artists residing in regional Western Australia including, Gascoyne, Goldfields – Esperance, Great Southern, Kimberley, Mid West, Peel, Pilbara, Southwest, Wheatbelt.  
  • All works entered into the prize must be available for display and purchase, for the duration of the exhibition. 
  • Artwork must have been completed between April 2021 and April 2022. 
  • Artwork which has already been sold or exhibited elsewhere will not be eligible for inclusion.  
  • The finished work must not exceed 180 cm in either length or width. 
  • Wall-hung artwork must not exceed 8 kg and must be framed (a stretched canvas is considered framed) and fitted with D rings at least 100 mm from the top of the work. 
  • Sculptural works must not exceed 15 kg in weight. 
  • Artists pre-selected for The Jury Art Prize will allow their works to be reproduced by print and electronic media in the advertising and promotion of the exhibition and for the exhibition catalogue. 
  • All expenses incurred in the submission of the entry are the responsibility of the applicant. 
  • The Junction Co./Courthouse Gallery+ Studio reserves the right to determine the most appropriate method for displaying works, and to refuse to display any works deemed inappropriate or unsafe. 
  • If artwork does not arrive as displayed in image submitted in registration form, The Junction Co./Courthouse Gallery+Studio reserve the right to reject the artwork and not include in exhibition. 
  • Prize amounts are to be advised.  


  • All entries into The Jury Art Prize must be submitted online.
  • There are computers available to submit online at the Gallery+Studio, as well as other key regional centres. 
  • Ensure you have submitted the correct information on your entry, no changes can be made after the submission has been complete. 
  • A complete online submission includes the following:

  1. Artist retail price 
  1. Image file of work submitted 
  1. Images must be jpeg format only (300dpi, 2MB) 
  1. Each file name should be clearly labelled with the artist’s surname (capitals), first name (lowercase), image number and title of the work. eg. SMITH_John_01_MonaLisa 
  1. An artist statement about the nominated work (maximum 150 words, in Word doc format only, 2MB) 
  1. Artist name 
  1. Artist biography as an attachment 
  1. Entry fee of $30+GST (non-refundable), to be paid online to complete registration   

Pre-selection + Judging 

All completed entries submitted will be presented for review to a pre-selection panel, consisting of two members of the Courthouse Gallery+Studio team, and an independent panelist.  

Artworks will be shortlisted based on a set of curatorial rationale including concept, workpersonship and originality. 

Finalists will be announced 13 April 2022, all entrants will be advised of the outcome via email; finalists will be announced to the public via our website and social media. 

Packing + Freight 

Finalist artworks must be at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio by Friday 29 April 2022.  

It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure their artwork is appropriately packaged for transportation to the Courthouse Gallery+Studio. All freight costs incurred are the responsibility of the artist and will not be subsided by The Junction Co./Courthouse Gallery+Studio. 

Each artwork must have an Artwork Submission Form attached to the back of the work.  

At the closure of the exhibition, artworks that have not sold by 06 August 2022, can be considered for the Courthouse Gallery+Studio Stockroom collection. 


At the point of artwork sale, the Courthouse Gallery+Studio will take a commission of 40% off the as nominated retail price submitted upon Jury Art Prize application.  

The retail price will include GST.  

The Junction Co. will make artwork payments within 30 days at the end of the exhibition.  

Publication + Copyright 

The Junction Co./Courthouse Gallery+Studio assumes all entries are original and are the works and/or property of the entrant with all rights granted therein. 

The Junction Co. is the sole owner of the information collected from the entry forms and any other information submitted, and will not sell, share or rent the information to others except for the sole purpose of advertising or promoting The Jury Art Prize via social media and The Junction Co. website. 

By submitting the entry registration form, the entrant is consenting to the use of their contact information for the purposes of receiving information about the outcome of their entry and all details relating to The Jury Art Prize. 

Should the contact information provided change between the time that the entry is submitted, and the results are announced, please contact the Courthouse Gallery+Studio via email at [email protected] to update your details. 

Finalists will be asked to provide a high-resolution file (300dpi 10 – 15MB) of their submission for promotional material or publication.  

The finalist agrees that the artwork may be reproduced by the gallery for critical review, archival and/or promotional purposes. The Junction Co/Courthouse Gallery+Studio is not liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the entrant and will at all times attribute authorship of the work.


The Courthouse Gallery+Studio:  

  • is responsible for unpacking, installing, and displaying the Works and must ensure that these activities are carried out by suitably qualified personnel;  
  • in it’s best efforts ensure that the Works are displayed in a manner that is fair, accessible to the public and sympathetic to the artwork’s context;  
  • must not frame or remount the Works unless the Artist:  
  • has made a corresponding request; or  
  • has given the Artist’s prior written consent.  
  • will handle each artwork with special care to prevent damage, deterioration that is not a characteristic of the Work; and  
  • will ensure that every exhibition is properly supervised at all times when open to the public and the safe protection of the Work at all times, including but not limited to protection from:  
  • hazards of fire, flood, theft, dirt, food, drinks, smoking; or  
  • handling by unauthorised or inexperienced personnel, including but not limited to members of the public.

How will I be notified if I’m selected as a Finalist? 

Finalists will be notified by email if they are selected as a finalist in The Jury Art Prize. 

What is the Patron Award Fund? 

The Patron Award Fund is a Town of Port Hedland supported arts fund that can be awarded to an artist residing in Port Hedland. This fund is awarded to assist Hedland based artists with the development of their arts practice, to learn a new skills that will contribute to their arts practice, support the creation of new artwork, or carry out professional development in the area of artist practice.  

I only want to be in the running for the Jury Prize, is this possible?  

Unfortunately, no. Once you have entered the prize your work will be open for judging in all categories. The only exception is the Patron Award, which can only be awarded to an artists residing in Port Hedland.  

My work includes a digital screen and requires power, can I still submit? 

Yes, we accept all media entries. However please note that if your work is selected all components of the work that support it, eg. screen, sound etc. must be included with a clear installation instruction.  

How many times can I enter? 

Artists are invited to enter the prize as many times as they wish, keeping in mind each entry includes a $30.00 submission fee.  

Do I need to pay for shipping my artwork to Port Hedland? 

Yes, all finalists selected are required to ship their artwork to the Courthouse Gallery+Studio in Port Hedland for the exhibition.  

What happens with my work after the exhibition? 

Should you work not sell during the exhibition, we will contact you to discuss the return of your work, or inclusion of it in the Courthouse Gallery+Studio Stockroom.
