EDIFY
BECOME A CONFIDENT, STRUCTURED + ENGAGING FACILITATOR
Add a new string to your creative bow with EDIFY: A Regional Facilitator Program. EDIFY is a short holistic program delivered weekly over 3 weeks with the aim to upskill artists, makers and people who have a creative talent who seek to facilitate workshops.
This course is designed to develop regional artists set of skills to become facilitators and to support the transition and fill a market gap of regional facilitators.
EDIFY aims to provide creatives with the tools to become confident, structured, and engaging facilitators.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
LEARNING OUTCOMES
This short course will tackle the golden rules of: What makes a skilful facilitator? You will learn and interact from knowledgeable artists and professionals, who will share their expertise in the domain. EDIFY will equip you with the tools to structure a meaningful and engaging workshop to your audience. To build on this new skill, EDIFY encourages you to rethink what it means to be facilitator in the region.

MODULES
MODULE 1 | UNDERSTANDING AUDIENCES
Monday 13 June, 6.30pm – 8pm | Facilitated by Jacky Cheng
In this session, you will learn about the reasons why you need to fathom your audience, what learning style to apply, what communication style to use, how to manage large groups and how to create a safe space for participants. This module is pivotal as it sets the foundations to develop the content and the structure of your workshop. With this module, you will start reflecting on your own experiences when attending workshops or courses.
MODULE 2 | HOW TO DESIGN YOUR SESSION PLAN ON A BRIEF
Monday 20 June, 6.30pm – 8pm | Facilitated by Jacky Cheng
Structure is the recipe for success and this module will prove it right. In this module, the facilitator will take you through some practical advice for you to plan as clearly as possible your session beforehand.
By going through some examples of workshop planning templates, you will learn how to gather the necessary information so you can structure your content adequately and time manage yourself to the perfection.
MODULE 3 | WHAT MAKES THE BEST FACILITATOR
Monday 27 June, 6.30pm – 8pm | Facilitated by Shona Erskine
In this module, you will navigate the behavioural, the interpersonal and look at what makes an effective and compelling facilitator? You will be introduced to the concepts of attention and perception and understand which lenses to use and when. You will also further the different communication style seen in Module 1 and explore the concepts of going visual vs going verbal. Paired with these concepts, you will master how to hold a space.

MEET THE GURUS
YOUR FACILITATORS
JACKY CHENG
Jacky Cheng was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She received her Bachelor of Architecture (Honours 1) from University of New South Wales, Sydney. She has since pursued her love for creating and making in smaller scales and the education sector.
Jacky works across several mediums incorporating her philosophy of ‘slow art’ – a visual participatory, most notably through paper bas-relief sculptures, installations and process-based works. Her introduction into the manipulation of paper was highly influenced by her elders on cultural practices and duties performed for Chinese Ritual purposes. She has since amalgamated both architectonic and visual language using papers and fibres as the predominant mediums in her practice. Her award winning manual hand-cut paper enchantment is featured in ABC Makers and Creators segment ‘The Paper Cutter’, ABC Arts – ‘How art changed my life’ as well as numerous art feeds and articles locally and internationally.
Her teaching accolades includes both state and national awards in Best Trainer/Teacher of the Year in Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector bestowed by the prestigious Australia Training Awards as well as a finalist for the Curtin University Teaching Excellence Award by Awards Australia.
Today, Jacky continues to practice and teach on the lands and waters in and around Yawuru Country, Northwest of Western Australia where she lives and work since 2006.
DR. SHONA ERSKINE
“A highly skilled psychologist and coach, I have dedicated my work to understanding the complexity inherent in creativity and innovation, and the challenges of expertise and elite performance.
I coach senior leaders in the skills of creative leadership, and lead workshops on the neuroscience of creative practice, spanning corporate, not-for-profit and creative sectors. I run facilitation processes that attend to complexity and perspective. I endeavour to enable workshop participants, distil issues and focus outcomes for immediate on-the-ground implementation.
I am expert in delivering psychology for performing and visual artists, as well as production and crew, through professional companies, universities, and in private practice. I have developed curriculum in areas of performance and wellbeing with an interest in disseminating best practice models to performing artist, teachers, and directors.
My work is client focused. Whether seeking psychological service, coaching, or facilitation, I work with you to identify needs before designing processes, tools, and techniques that are practical and research based.”
