CREATIVE SPACE
Sharon Gosling is a talented seamstress based in Port Hedland, WA, Australia. Gravitating towards using mostly linen and cotton, Sharon appreciates the texture and tone of these natural materials. Her work embodies timeless elegance, manipulating material to effortlessly flow on every body type while maintaining a focus on sustainability.
Born in Warragul, VIC, Sharon developed an interest in sewing at the age of 13 during home economics classes in high school. Not being very tall, she often had to take up pants and sew buttons back on, which sparked her passion for sewing. By the age of 15, she was making clothes for herself and others. Sharon is primarily self-taught, but between the ages of 17 and 25, she also completed various TAFE courses around fashion, kids’ clothing and pattern making.
Sharon’s artistic style embodies resort-style elegance with a refined touch. She emphasises practical and versatile designs that harmonize with the environment, with a strong focus on sustainability. Her colour palette draws inspiration from nature, particularly the subtle greens and pinks of the Pilbara, which currently captivate her. Sharon employs classic sewing techniques enhanced with fine details, and she prefers working with natural fibres.
Sharon has been broadening her horizons and exploring opportunities to exhibit her work. As a teenager, she participated in the Sunshine Coast Fashion Awards with a joint entry at 19 years old, winning the student category. She has also showcased her creations at the Pilbara Fashion Festival, various markets and stalls around the Pilbara and Kimberley, and was a stallholder in the Bazaar Makers Markets at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2020.
Currently, Sharon is a guest Maker at the Courthouse Gallery+Syudio, working on her Henryetta range for kids (also referred to as Little Henryetta), which is aimed at babies and toddlers 000-3. She is thrilled to be working towards an exhibition opportunity next year, creating innovative and captivating wearable art.
Sharon’s mission as an artist is to create fashion that empowers the wearer, embodying timeless elegance and comfort. She draws inspiration from the beauty around her and aims to inspire others through her work. Sharon believes in creating sustainable fashion that can be continually worn and passed down, promoting the philosophy of “lasting beauty through mindful creation.” Her work reflects her commitment to sustainability and the creation of enduring, beautiful pieces.
Sharon will be working out the Makers in Residence Space, at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio, come in and say hello!
