Red Jug, Pod Vase and Corymbia Ficifolia
My still life paintings reveal ideas of stillness and space in the details of the everyday. My practice draws on my background as an art teacher, potter and parent living and working in our regional community of Albany-Kinjarling, as well as my interest in objects as containers of meaning and conveyors of narrative.
When we moved into our home on December 24, the red flowering gum (Corymbia Ficifolia) across the road was in full bloom, and it was magnificent. The tree is part of living in Albany – I see it every day and I am always looking for it. The seasonal blossoms signal the anniversary of our move to Albany and the ongoing generosity of neighbours. The red vessel was given to me by family, and I made the pod vase as a member of the Albany Pottery Group.
I wouldn’t be painting like this if I lived anywhere else.
