Building Gallery Expertise Through Hands-On Learning

The Junction Co. x Art On The Move Professional Development Workshop Recap.

Earlier this week, The Junction Co., in partnership with Art On The Move, hosted a two-day intensive designed to deepen gallery expertise and build foundational skills for regional creatives. Held at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio, the workshop welcomed participants from a range of arts backgrounds – some new to gallery operations, others looking to refresh and expand their practice.

This immersive experience wasn’t just about learning technical skills. It was about strengthening collaboration, fostering safety and inclusivity, and empowering arts workers across the region to confidently contribute to the growing gallery landscape.

Skills in Focus: From Theory to Application

Across both days, participants engaged in carefully curated sessions led by experienced facilitators Elizabeth Knuckey and Belinda Cobby. Their approach blended industry insight with practical demonstration, covering topics such as:

  • Condition Reporting: Understanding documentation protocols for artworks, including assessing damage, recording conditions, and handling provenance.
  • Safe Handling & Packing: Exploring equipment, materials, and best practices for transportation and storage that prioritise artwork safety and staff wellbeing.
  • Exhibition Design & Installation: Learning installation techniques with a focus on cohesion, spacing, accessibility, and audience experience.
  • Gallery Presentation & Maintenance: Discussing ongoing upkeep, lighting considerations, and creating welcoming spaces through thoughtful presentation.

Whether wrapping a delicate sculpture or refining spatial layout for an upcoming exhibition, participants gained hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and workflows.

Collaboration at the Core

At the heart of this program was a shared commitment to cross-organisational learning and regional capacity building. The workshop brought together emerging creatives, seasoned arts workers, and facilitators in a space that championed open dialogue, peer mentoring, and skill-sharing.

The Junction Co. and Art On The Move believe that investing in professional development strengthens not only individual careers, but the cultural infrastructure of regional Australia. By equipping teams with the tools to work confidently and safely, we ensure that our galleries are sustainable, inclusive, and ready to welcome diverse communities.

This workshop is part of a broader push by The Junction Co. and Courthouse Gallery+Studio to create accessible pathways into the arts and gallery sector. By collaborating with renowned partners like Art On The Move, we’re expanding the horizon for creatives all across regional Western Australia.

Stay tuned for upcoming training intensives, mentorship opportunities, and exhibition-based learning designed to elevate the next generation of cultural contributors.
