Artist
Melanie Johnston
Born in the Kimberley and raised in the Pilbara, Johnston has always been surrounded by the beauty of the region. While creativity has long been a natural part of life, painting became a true calling, both as a form of self-expression and a way to release life’s tensions. Over the past two decades, Johnston has actively developed their practice, regularly exhibiting at the Cossack Art Awards for more than 10 years and recently receiving recognition in the Abstract Category at the 2025 Dampier Art Awards.
Influenced by country, rocks, ocean, and emotion, their work captures both fleeting feelings and grounded reflections. Each piece becomes an honest snapshot of a moment, whether meditative or bold, shaped by curiosity, life’s challenges, and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Alongside creating, Johnston finds joy in viewing and collecting original works by other artists, nurturing a deep appreciation for artistic expression in all its forms.
