Sunrise is a magical time of day, but especially so at Hedland’s Pretty Pool creek. At low tide the vast stretch of beach collects pools of seawater amongst the delicately formed sand ripples. These, together with the wet sand reflect the sky perfectly, like a mirror. In this pastel painting I wanted to capture the cusp of sunrise, as the sky fills with the vibrant intensity of red, orange and yellow, turning the darkness of dawn into deep purples.
