About the Dirty Earth Youth Art Prize

The Dirty Earth Youth Art Prize is an opportunity for the youth in Hedland to learn more about recycling, responsible use of resources and sustainable living through creative exploration. The goal of the project is to raise awareness and support on recycling and sustainability amongst the youth while building strong coalitions between community stakeholders in education, sustainability and the arts. The Dirty Earth Youth Art Prize gives young artists the opportunity to showcase their creativity by turning reclaimed and recycled materials into pieces of art. Open for ages 5 – 18, a total of $1,000 worth of prizes will be awarded on the opening event.

A series of workshops as part of the Dirty Earth Project have been held to provide development opportunities in preparation for the prize, to inspire the transformation of commonly discarded objects into works of art.

This is an important event for young people in Hedland to involve themselves in a creative process while also engaging with recycling and its importance on the environment. It is crucial to consider different ways to care for our environment. This initiative combines recycling with a creative process.

About the Creative Youth Day Event

The Creative Youth Day is held in conjunction with the Dirty Earth Youth Prize and is the perfect platform to celebrate the youth of Hedland. Kids of all ages are able to explore and experiment by being creatively hands-on and learn about this year’s theme:  recycling, responsible use of resources and sustainable living

What to Expect

ENTERTAINMENT + PERFORMANCES
This year we have the pleasure of having the Hedland High School Band and JaBat Dance Group perform at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio.

HANDS ON WORKSHOPS
Explore underwater creatures with Sarah Green using found and discarded objects or get your hands dirty and make your own paper by recycling old paper pieces with the Gallery’s very own Skye.

PUBLIC ART COLLABORATION

The Courthouse Gallery+Studio Courtyard is getting a makeover, and we want you to join in! Splash a little colour over Portside with us and make your mark in the centre of town by helping us brighten up the Courthouse Gallery+Studio Courtyard’s planter boxer seating area with a little bit of Public Art.

SNACKS

Beat the heat with juice from the food van, nibble from the fruit platters or pop over and see the team at the Silver Star Train for something a little more.

ACTIVITIES

There will be plenty to see and do at the Creative Youth Day both inside and out with hands on activities and exploration.

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENTS

The winners for each category will be announced and presented their prize, as well as a People’s Choice, that will be done on the day.
